Reimagining Melton Town Square
Breathing new life into public spaces through the curation of a vibrant arts program for community
Melton City Council, Melbourne Suburban Revitalisation Board
Melton, Wadawarrung, Bunurong and Wurundjeri Country, Victoria
A dynamic blend of urban vitality and rural charm, the City of Melton has witnessed significant population growth over the years, emerging as one of Victoria’s key metropolitan areas for new families. The area boasts diverse demographics across cultures, ages, and lifestyles.
Seeking to enhance the vibrancy in Melton’s town centre and engagement of the community, Melton City Council envisaged ‘Reimagine Melton’ - an arts initiative aimed at activating community participation in the cultural landscape in the heart of the city.
Artbox was engaged to curate and deliver ‘Reimagine Melton,’ a multifaceted public art program that immersed the community in various artistic processes. Drawing on a diverse range of artists and innovative artworks, the project incorporated interactive and immersive installations. Central to our approach was the desire to bridge connections between people and places, turning ‘Reimagine Melton’ into shared memories, stories, and inspirations. We wanted residents to see their thoughts, their colours, and their faces reflected in public installations.
By transforming the town centre into an artistic playground, ‘Reimagine Melton’ increased local pride, positioned the city as a creative hub, and boosted tourism, driving economic benefits and a deeper appreciation for arts and culture within the community.
We delivered five engaging, insightful, and collaborative installations as touchpoints throughout the Melton Town Centre. Works ranged from sound-based installations, to screen-based, augmented digital technologies. All of which allowed audiences to conceive themselves as integral parts of the artworks themselves by encouraging reflection and community participation.
