Faster. Higher. Stronger.
Art celebrating everyday determination and inspiring personal growth
City Of Casey
Cranbourne West, Bunurong Country, Victoria
'Faster. Higher. Stronger.' inspires the viewer to push themselves to their personal best - rather than winning at all costs. The artwork responded to themes of ‘pursuit of excellence as a community’ and ‘breaking mental barriers that holds us back’.
City of Casey commissioned the artwork for the Barton Reserve sporting precinct. The goal was to devise an artwork that reflected the locality with the site situated between a school, medical centre, community centre, and sporting fields.
Rather than focusing on professional sports, artist Damian Vick conceptualised a sculpture conveying bodies in motion and symbolising striving for personal bests and perseverance. These powerful themes were shaped into an artwork that focuses on involvement and effort, moving away from glorifying professional sports to celebrate individual determination and daily heroism.
Over a three-month concept phase, the artist developed a creative approach based on three steel figures engaged in non-specific sporting actions, such as running and jumping. Each figure interacts with one of the three towering steel pillars, symbolically shattering them. Corten steel and aluminium reflect the raw, enduring strength. Artwork fabrication took four months, followed by a three-day installation at the site.
'Faster. Higher. Stronger.' inspires with its striking placement and serves as a symbol of community-driven progress and determination for the local residents of Casey.
