The lobby and mezzanine of Charter Hall's historic No.1 Martin Place underwent a transformative redesign, epitomising a new wave of vibrant and creative multi-functional spaces for commercial tenancy. The premium-grade office building sits prominently in Martin Place, at the iconic site of Sydney's first General Post Office. With the redesign completed in August 2018, the lobby and mezzanine provide a vibrant, technology-enabled space that sparks creative thinking, enhances productivity, and creates a better workplace experience.
A standout feature is the ground-to-mezzanine media wall. In late 2018, Artbox was tasked with consulting on content for the media wall. Charter Hall sought to program creative pieces that profiled Australian artists. The challenge was determining the art type suitable for enhancing the newly refurbished lobby and mezzanine.
Artbox provided guidance on curating memorable and curious artworks. Our aim was to create bold, welcoming statements that aligned with the architectural and interior design intent. Most importantly, artworks that could be appreciated both within and outside the building - drawing the public's gaze through the glass entrance to the lobby to make a lasting impression.
Artbox introduced the project stakeholder team to the creative practices of various artists, ultimately leading to the commissioning of a series of unique, screen-based digital artworks. The inaugural artworks "Displacement" and "Data 2000" became emblematic of the sophisticated refurbishment at No.1 Martin Place. The bold colouring is highly visible from the exterior, and creates a subtle atmosphere of vibrancy within.
The media wall now serves as a dynamic platform for showcasing screen-based visual artworks, transforming the third-place service areas into a hub of inspiration for tenants and visitors.
The success of this project established a lasting partnership between Artbox and Charter Hall, leading to further art commissions at other prestigious Charter Hall properties.
